Frequently Asked Questions

You might find the answer to your question in our FAQ section below. We’ve compiled some of the most common inquiries to provide you with quick and helpful information.

  • What is Earlens and how is it different from a traditional hearing aid?
Earlens uses a tiny lens on your eardrum to directly vibrate it, rather than relying on a speaker. This provides a broader range of sound frequencies and a more natural listening experience. It also greatly reduces the risk of feedback or whistling.

  • Is the Earlens device right for me?
Earlens is for adults 18+ with mild to severe sensorineural hearing loss. You must have a healthy eardrum and middle ear, without chronic infections. Your provider will confirm your candidacy.

  • How do I know if I’m a candidate for Earlens?
An ENT physician and audiologist will test your hearing and examine your ear. They’ll determine if your ear anatomy and type of hearing loss are suitable. This evaluation is required before getting Earlens.

  • Is Earlens covered by my insurance?
Most insurance plans do not cover hearing aids, including Earlens. Some exceptions may apply, so it’s best to check with your provider. Financing options are often available through Earlens clinics.
  • What is the process for getting Earlens?
You’ll have a hearing test, ear exam, and a custom ear impression taken. Once your device is made, an ENT places the lens on your eardrum and your audiologist programs the processor. You might also have follow-up visits to fine-tune your settings.

  • Do I need to see a doctor to get Earlens?
Yes, Earlens is prescription-only. Both an ENT and an audiologist are required for fitting and ongoing care. It cannot be purchased or fit over-the-counter.

  • Is the lens placement procedure painful?
The lens is placed during a quick, in-office procedure. Most people only notice a mild sensation at first, which fades quickly. No surgery or anesthesia is needed.

  • Is there a trial period for Earlens?
Yes, Earlens offers a trial period, but details vary by provider. The Lens is custom-made, so some fees may not be refundable. Ask your provider about specific trial terms.
  • How do I care for my Earlens device?
You’ll apply a special mineral oil to help the lens stay in place and manage earwax. Do not use cotton swabs or poke anything in your ear, as this could dislodge or damage the lens. The processor must be recharged nightly using the included charger.

  • How often do I need to see my doctor or audiologist?
After fitting, yearly checkups are recommended. These visits ensure the lens is in place and your device is working properly. Schedule sooner if you notice issues.

  • Can I remove the lens myself?
No, only an ENT physician can place or remove the lens. You can remove and reinsert the processor and ear tip daily. The lens stays in your ear until your doctor removes it.

  • Can I shower or swim while wearing Earlens?
You must remove the processor and ear tip before getting wet. The lens can stay in place on your eardrum. If you swim regularly, we suggest using a pair of earplugs.

  • How do I charge the device?
Simply dock the processor in its charging cradle each night. This ensures a full day of use. The lens itself does not need charging.
  • Can Earlens connect to my smartphone?
Yes, Earlens pairs with Apple iPhones. You can stream calls, music, and adjust settings via the Earlens app. Check with your provider for the latest compatibility updates.

  • What is the battery life of the device?
The processor lasts a full day on a single charge. Recharge it nightly in its dock. The lens has no battery and is powered wirelessly.

  • What is the warranty for Earlens?
Earlens includes a 3-year warranty covering repairs and software updates. It also provides one-time replacement for loss or damage. Terms may vary, so confirm details with your provider.
